Boston and Cambridge Stand Up
for Security
Officers
Support a Safer Boston and Cambridge
There
is a sad reality in the high-rise office buildings and universities
of Boston and Cambridge. The people charged with the greatest of
responsibilities—protecting the people and property of these
great institutions—are living on the brink of poverty.
Too many of the 3,000 security officers serving as our first-line
of defense in any crisis or emergency are paid little more than
$10 an hour and don’t earn enough to afford health care coverage.
What’s worse, too many of these men and women aren’t
provided paid vacation time or sick leave. It is no wonder the
turnover rate for security jobs is as high as 300 percent. This,
and the lack of training offered to officers, leaves us all vulnerable
to threats.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Join the mayors of Boston
and Cambridge, city councilors, state legislators, and religious
leaders in saying that enough is enough. Security officers, our
first-line of defense, need better working conditions, professional
respect, and living wages. It is the best way to protect Boston,
Cambridge, and our fellow citizens.
